Tai Chi in the Gallery

The ancient Chinese art of Tai Chi uses gentle flowing movements and has been known to reduce stress and improve relaxation, vitality, agility, flexibility and regulation of metabolism. Local artist Jacquelyn Mate is a specialist in the tradition of wycinanki (pronounced vih-chee-nahn-kee), Polish paper-cutting. She will offer this wycinanki workshop for children and their parents in the Museum's Education Wing. There is no cost for the workshops. Class size is limited and pre-registration is required. Call HMA at 828-327-8576.

Wycinanki are symmetrical, cut-paper designs used for decorations and often made with layers of colored papers. In 19th century America, wycinanki were inexpensive ways for Polish immigrants to provide lively decorations for Christmas.

Additional workshops will take place at Hickory Museum of Art (see below), Ridgeview Branch Library (828-345-6037) and Patrick Beaver Memorial Library (828-304-0500 ext. 7277). The workshops are presented by the Hickory International Council, Hickory Museum of Art and Hickory Public Library.
